Kalamazoo Industries has added an abrasive wheel speed calculator to its web site to enable users to determine the edge speed (SFPM) of a wheel as it wears down, or to determine the RPM required to achieve a given SFPM for a wheel of a given diameter. Users enter the diameter of the wheel and choose either SFPM or RPM. The result appears in a pop-up window.

Maintaining edge speed is critical to achieving a clean cut without scorching. The target is about 12,000 SFPM for dry cutting and about 8,000 SFPM for wet cutting. Most saws with a given new wheel diameter with deliver these respective speeds. As the wheel wears down, the diameter is reduced, resulting in a slower edge speed. By calculating wheel speed an operator can better determine the life left on the wheel.
