Kalamazoo Industries Inc. Cutting Super Alloy’s Tips
Cutting either alloy’s and or super alloy’s is a science. You will need horse power, the correct wheel, correct part placement and the correct wheel. Below are some tips for cutting super alloy’s & alloy’s
- Horse power- Using enough HP is key! You can’t go wrong with more HP. We can recommend a saw HP that will do the job. Give us a call.
- Use the correct abrasive cutoff blades- Abrasive blades are not created equal. There are different grades/bonds and reinforcements for specific materials. Let us know what material you are cutting so we can specify the correct machine and the correct abrasive wheel grade for your material that will give good cuts.
Kalamazoo Industries Inc. Cutting Super Alloy’s Tips
- Wet or Dry cutting? Cutting Dry at 12,000 SFPM is the first choice if possible. It’s easy to collect and sweep up the abrasive dust and coolant will not contaminate the material. Wet cutting requires 8000 SFPM and is NOT for general purpose cutting just to keep the dust down. Wet cutting helps keep the work piece “cool” and eliminates burning, discoloration and tempering of the work piece. Wet cutting requires daily cleanup of the coolant tank, saw, etc. Most metallurgical cuts need coolant and clamping on both sides of the cut to eliminate burning so the metallurgist can see the internal properties of the material when it’s not burned or discolored and needs less polishing to view the sample cut.
- Material Clamping- Ideally you need to clamp on BOTH sides of the work piece (as close to the blade as possible), DO NOT allow the work piece to move during cutting which will cause the abrasive blade to break. Be sure your work piece is securely held tightly!
- Work piece position- Keeping the work piece ahead of abrasive blade center out towards the operator is the best position. Cutting behind blade center causes climb cutting and doesn’t allow the swarf out of the cut which gives bad cuts.
- Give us a call at (800) 592-2050, we have experience in cutting all types of exotic alloys. We can dry cut 3” Inconel in 7 seconds, 5” in 15 seconds and 7.5” in 30 seconds all day long. Great for production cutting for investment casting foundries that need to cut charges to length/weight for roll over molds.
